I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy. (687) Let all souls draw life from it. Let them approach this sea of mearcy with great trust. Sinners will attain justification, and the just will be confirmed in good. Whoever places his trust in My mercy will be filled with My divine peace at the hour of death. (1520)

The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vesel only, and that is - trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive. Souls that trust boundlessly are a great comfort to Me, because I pour all the treasures of My graces into them. I rejoice that they ask for much, because it is My desire to give much, very much. (1578) The soul that trust in My mercy is most fortunate, because I myself take care of it. (1273) Tell them that no soul that has called upon My mercy has been disappointed or brought to shame. I delight particularly in a soul that has placed its trust in My goodness. (1541)

The two rays denote the Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of the souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by the lance on the Cross ... Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him (299).

The flames of mercy are burning me. I desire to pour them out upon human souls. Oh, what pain they cause Me when they do not want to accept them! Tell aching mankind to snuggle close to My merciful Heart, and I will fill it with peace. (1074) Mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to My mercy. (300)

Speak to the world about My mercy; let all mankind recognize My unfathomable mercy. It is a sign for the end times; after it will come the day of justice. While there is still time, let them have recourse to the fount of My mercy; let them profit from the Blood and Water which gushed forth for them. (848) Before I come as a just judge, I first open wide the door of My mercy. He who refuses to pass through the door of My mercy must pass through the door of My justice ... (1146)

Pope John Paul II Quotes on Divine Mercy

For this reason, the Church must consider it one of her principal duties -- at every stage of history and especially in our modern age -- to proclaim and to introduce into life the mystery of mercy, supremely revealed in Jesus Christ. Not only for the Church herself as the community of believers but also in a certain sense for all humanity, this mystery is the source of a life different from the life which can be built by man, who is exposed to the oppressive forces of the threefold concupiscence active within him.(128) (Pope John Paul II Encyclical letter "On the Mercy of God, 14")

The Church proclaims the truth of God's mercy revealed in the crucified and risen Christ, and she professes it in various ways. Furthermore, she seeks to practice mercy towards people through people, and she sees in this an indispensable condition for solicitude for a better and "more human" world, today and tomorrow. However, at no time and in no historical period -- especially at a moment as critical as our own -- can the Church forget the prayer that is a cry for the mercy of God amid the many forms of evil which weigh upon humanity and threaten it. Precisely this is the fundamental right and duty of the Church in Christ Jesus, her right and duty towards God and towards humanity.(135) (Pope John Paul II Encyclical letter "On the Mercy of God, 15")

St. Faustina

Sister Faustina was born on 25 August 1905 in Glogowiec, Poland to Marianna and Stanislaw Kowaslski as the third of ten children. From a very young age, she was known for her love of prayer, deligence and obedience, and concern for the poor. She attended elementary school for merely three years and then she went to work as a housekeeper in various well-to-do families.

From the age of seven, she had felt the calling for religious vocation, but her parents would not give her permission to enter teh convent. However, impelled by the vision of the Suffering Christ in 1924, she left for Warsaw for find a place. In 1925, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and took the name of Sr. Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament. She lived as a member of the Congregation for 13 years, where she worked as a cook, gardener, and portress. Although her life was apparently insignificant and monotonous, she hid within herself an extraordinary union with God. She cooperated with God's mercy in the task of saving poor sinners. At the specific request of the Lord Jesus and following His example, she made a sacrifice of her own life for the sake of sinners. Her spiritual life was distinguished as well by a deep love of the Holy Eucharist and a special devotion to Mary as the Mother of Mercy.

The Lord chose Sr. Faustina as the Apostle and Secretary of His mercy, so she would share the urgent message of Divine Mercy with our troubled modern world.

"In the Old Covenant I sent prophets wielding thunderbolts to My people. Today I am sending you with My mercy to the people of the whole world. I do not want to punish aching mankind, but I desire to heal it, pressing it to My Merciful Heart." (1588)

Her mission consisted in three main tasks:

  1. Reminding the world and the Church of the truth of God's mercy for every human being, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures;
  2. Entreating Divine Mercy for the whole world, especially for poor sinners, through the practice of new forms of devotion to the Divine Mercy;
  3. Initiating the apostolic movement of Divine Mercy, the followers of which proclaim and entreat Divine Mercy for the world and strive to practice the works of mercy following the example of St. Faustina.

Sister Faustina recorded the various aspects of her mission in a diary, which she kept at the specific request of her confessor and spiritual director, Fr. Michael Sopocko, and later at the command of the Lord Jesus Himself. In it, she faithfully wrote down all of the Lord's wishes and described the encounters between her soul and Him.

Consumed by tuberculosis and innumerable sufferings, which she suffered for poor sinners, Sr. Faustina died in Cracow at the age of 33 on October 5, 1935.

On April 18 1993, Pope John Paul II beatified Sr. Faustina at St. Peter's Square in Rome. In his homily, he said: "O Faustina, how extraordinary your life is! Precisely you, the poor and simple daughter of Mazovia, of the Polish people, wer chosen by Christ to remind people of this great mystery of Divine Mercy! You bore this mystery within yourself, leaving this world after a short life, filled with suffering. However, at the same time, this mystery has become a prophetic reminder to the world ... ."

Then, on April 30, 2000, which was the first Sunday after Easter, Pope John Paul II canonized Sr. Faustina as the first saint of the Great Jubilee Year. The Holy Father also announced during his homily that the Second Sunday of Easter would now be celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the universal Church.

Divine Mercy from the Diary of St. Faustina

The Essentials of Divine Mercy

God is mercy:
I am Love and Mercy itself (1074). My Heart overflows with great mercy for souls, and especially for poor sinners ... it is for them that the Blood and Water flowed from my Heart as from a fount overflowing with mercy (367). Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet (699). My mercry is greater than your sins, and those of the entire world (1485). I let my Sacred Heart be pierced with a lance, thus opening wide the source of mercy for you. Come then with trust to draw graces from this fountain (1485).

The ABC's of Mercy:
Ask for His Mercy
Be merciful to others
Completely trust in Jesus

return to Divine Mercy list

Ask for His Mercy

Souls that make an appeal to My mercy delight Me. To such souls I grant even more graces than they ask. I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion (1146).

Beg for mercy for the whole world (570).

No soul that has called upon My mercy has ever been disappointed (1541).

return to Divine Mercy list

Be merciful to others

I demand from you deeds of mercy which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse yourself from it. ... Even the strongest faith if of no avail without works (742).

I am Love and Mercy itself. When a soul approaches Me with trust, I fill it with such an abundance of graces that it cannot contain them within itself, but radiates them to other souls (1074).

If a soul does not exercise mercy in some way, it will not obtain My mercy on the day of judgment (1317).

return to Divine Mercy list

Completely trust in Jesus

I have opened My Heart as a living fountain of mercy. Let all souls draw life from it. Let them approach this sea of mercy with great trust (1520).

On the cross, the fountain of My mercy was opened wide by the lance for all souls - no one have I excluded! (1182)

I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: "Jesus, I trust in You" (327). The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vesel only, and that is - trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive (1578).

I never reject a contrite heart (1485). Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul (1777).

The Image of The Divine Mercy

In 1931 Our Lord appeared to St. Faustina in a vision. She saw Jesus clothed in a white garment with His right hand raised in blessing. His left hand was touching His garment in the area of the heart, from where two large rays came forth, one red and the other pale. She gazed intently at the Lord in silence; her soul was filled with awe, but also with great joy. Jesus said to her:

Paint an image according to the pattern you see with the signature: Jesus I trust in You (47). I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory (48). I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: "Jesus I trust in You" (327). I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and throughout the world (47).

At the request of her spiritual director, St. Faustina asked the Lord about the meaning of the rays in the Image. She heard these words in reply:

The two rays denote the Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of the souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by the lance on the Cross ... Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him (299).

By means of this image I shall grant many graces to souls. It is to be a reminder of the demands of My mercy, because even the strongest of faith is of no avail without works (742).

By means of this image I shall be granting many graces to souls; so let every soul have access to it. (570)

Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday)

Celebrate on the Second Sunday of Easter.

1. Celebrate the Feast on the Second Sunday of Easter.

During the Mass of canonization of St. Faustina on April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II proclaimed: "It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church, will be called Divine Mercy Sunday."

2. Sincerely repent of all our sins, go to Confession (preferably beforehand), and receive Holy Communion on the day of the Feast.

According to St. Faustina, Our Lord promises the remission of guilt and the punishment of sins, for those who go to confession and receive communion on this day.

"On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity." (699) Many take this to mean that they must go to Confession ON Divine Mercy Sunday. This is not true. To receive the benefits of the Promise one must be in the state of grace. The Lord does not promise the absolution of grave sin on Divine Mercy Sunday, but points us to the Sacrament of Penance. To receive the grace we should be disposed and this is done by a confession near the time of Mercy Sunday. According to the Cardinal of Krakow, the confession which a Catholic makes during Lent in preparation for Easter is sufficient. It would be impossible for priests to hear everyone's Confession on the feast itself. Instead priority should be given to those who have not yet gone to Confession.

The plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who take part in the prayers and devotions held on Divine Mercy Sunday, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus, eg. "Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!" The usual conditions apply, namely one is to have made asacramental confession up to about 20 days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday, have received Eucharistic communion and prayed for the intentions of the Holy Father.

3. Venerate the Image of The Divine Mercy

Pope John Paul II said that the image of The Divine Mercy portrays the Risen Jesus Christ bringing Mercy to the whole world. Our Lord said "I want the image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it". (341) "I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish". (48) "I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You". (327)

A previously blessed image can be used in processions, be the object of veneration during a communal recitation of the Chaplet of Mercy or other devotions as the parish may celebrate during the Feast of Mercy.

4. Be merciful to others, through our actions, words, and prayers on their behalf.

Jesus said to St. Faustina: "I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. ... I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: the first - by deed, the second - by word, the third - by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy, and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me. By this means a soul glorifies and pays reverence to My mercy". (742)

Priests are to gently encourage the faithful to practice works of charity or mercy as often as they can, following the example of Christ because He said: 'Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy' (Mt 5,7). An act of mercy should take place in our lives in preparation for the Feast, being merciful to others in our words, deeds and prayer. Actually being merciful like Jesus is the whole reason for the celebration of the Feast of Divine Mercy -- through us God shows His mercy to others.

Preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday

Pray the Novena to the Divine Mercy for the nine days preceding the Second Sunday of Easter, beginning on Good Friday.

return to Divine Mercy list

The Novena to the Divine Mercy

It is greatly recommended that the following novena intentions and prayers be said together with the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, since Our Lord specifically asked for a novena of Chaplets, especially before the "Feast of Mercy."

First Day:

"Today bring me all mankind, especially all sinners, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. In this way you will console Me in the bitter grief into which the loss of souls plunges me."

Most Merciful Jesus, whose very nature it is to have compassion on us and to forgive us, do not look upon our sins but upon our trust which we place in Your infinite goodness. Receive us all into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart, and never let us escape from It. We beg this of You by Your love which unties You to the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon all mankind and especially upon your poor sinners, all enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion show us Your mercy, that we may praise the omnipotence of Your mercy for ever and ever. Amen.

Second Day:

"Today bring to Me the souls of priests and religious, and immerse them in My unfathomable mercy. It was they who gave Me strength to endure My bitter Passion. Through them as through channels My mercy flows out upon mankind."

Most Merciful Jesus, from whom comes all that is good, increase Your grace in men and women consecrated to Your service, that they may perform worthy works of mercy; and all who see them may glorify the Father of Mercy who is in heaven.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the company of chosen ones in Your vineyard --- upon the souls of priests and religious; and endow them with the strength of Your blessing. For the love of the Heart of Your Son in which they are enfolded, impart to them Your power and light, that they may be able to guide others in the way of Your salvation and with one voice sing praise to Your boundless mercy for ages without end. Amen.

Third Day:

"Today bring to me all devout and faithful souls, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. These souls brought Me consolation on the Way of the Cross. They were that drop of consolation in the midst of an ocean of bitterness."

Most Merciful Jesus, from the treasury of Your mercy, You impart Your graces in great abundance to each and all. Receive us into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart and never let us escape from It. We beg this grace of You by that most wondrous love for the heavenly Father with which Your Heart burns so fiercely.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon faithful souls, as upon the inheritance of Your Son. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, grant them Your blessing and surround them with Your constant protection. Thus may they never fail in love or lose the treasure of the holy faith, but rather, with all the hosts of Angels and Saints, may they glorify Your boundless mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Fourth Day:

"Today bring to Me those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Me. I was thinking also of them during My bitter Passion and their future zeal comforted My Heart. Immerse them in the ocean of My mercy."

Most Compassionate Jesus, You are the Light of the world. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who do not believe in God and of those who as yet do not know You. Let the rays of Your grace enlighten them that they, too, together with us, may extol Your wonderful mercy; and do not let them escape from the abode which is Your Most Compassionate Heart.

Eternal Father, turn your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who do not believe in You, and of those who as yet do not know You, but who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Draw them to the light of the Gospel. These souls do not know what great happiness it is to love You. Grant that they, too, may extol the generosity of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Fifth Day:

"Today bring to Me the souls of those who have separated themselves from My Church, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. During My bitter Passion they tore at my Body and Heart, that is, My Church. As they return to unity with the Church My wounds heal and in this way they alleviate My Passion."

Most Merciful Jesus, Goodness Itself, You do not refuse light to those who seek it of You. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Church. Draw them by Your light into the unity of the Church, and do not let them escape from the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart; but bring it about that they, too, come to glorify the generosity of Your mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Son's Church, who have squandered Your blessings and misused Your graces by obstinately persisting in their error. Do not look upon their errors, but upon the love of Your own Son and upon His bitter Passion, which he underwent for their sake, since they, too, are enclosed in His Most Compassionate Heart. Bring it about that they also may glorify Your great mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Sixth Day:

"Today bring to Me the meek and humble souls and the souls of little children, and immerse them in My mercy. These souls most closely resemble my Heart. They strengthened Me during My bitter agony. I saw them as earthy Angels, who will keep vigil at My altars, I pour out upon them whole torrents of grace. Only the humble soul is capable of receiving My grace. I favor humble souls with My confidence."

Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said, "Learn from Me that I am meek and humble of heart." Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart all meek and humble souls and the souls of little children. These souls send all heaven into ecstasy and they are the heavenly Father's favorites. They are sweet-smelling bouquet before the throne of God; God himself takes delight in their fragrance. These souls have a permanent abode in Your Most Compassionate Heart, O Jesus, and they unceasingly sing out a hymn of love and mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon meek souls, upon humble souls, and upon little children who are enfolded in the abode which is the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls bear the closes resemblance to Your Son. Their fragrance rises from the earth and reaches Your very throne. Father of mercy and of all goodness, I beg You by the love You bear these souls and by the delight You take in them: Bless the whole world, that all souls together may sing out the praises of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Seventh Day:

"Today bring to Me the souls who especially venerate and glorify My mercy. These souls sorrowed most over my Passion and entered most deeply into My spirit. They are living images of My Compassionate Heart. These souls will shine with a special brightness in the next life. Not one of them will go into the fire of hell. I shall particularly defend each one of them at the hour of death."

Most Merciful Jesus, whose Heart is Love Itself, receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who particularly extol and venerate the greatness of Your mercy. These souls are mighty with very power of God Himself. In the midst of all afflictions and adversities they go forward, confident of Your mercy; and united to You, O Jesus, they carry all mankind on their shoulders. These souls will not be judged severely, but Your mercy will embrace them as they depart from this life.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls who glorify and venerate your greatest attribute, that of Your fathomless mercy, and who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls are a living Gospel; their hands are full of deeds of mercy, and their hearts, overflowing with joy, sing a canticle of mercy to You, O Most High! I beg You O God; Show them Your mercy according to the hope and trust they have placed in You. Let there be accomplished in them the promise of Jesus, who said to them that during their life, but especially at the hour of death, the souls who will venerate this fathomless mercy of His, He, Himself, will defend as His glory. Amen.

Eighth Day:

"Today bring to Me the souls who are detained in Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice."

Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet, who must make retribution to Your justice. May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart pour out the flames of Purgatory, that there, too, the power of Your mercy may be celebrated.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls suffering in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg you, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded: Manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way but only through the Wounds of Jesus, Your dearly beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. Amen.

Ninth Day:

"Today bring to Me souls who have become lukewarm, and immerse them in the abyss of my mercy. These souls wound My Heart most painfully. My soul suffered the most dreadful loathing in the Garden of Olives because of lukewarm souls. They were the reason I cried out: 'Father, take this cup away from Me, if it be Your will.' For them the last hope of salvation is to run to My mercy."

Most Compassionate Jesus, You are Compassion Itself. I bring lukewarm souls into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart. In this fire of Your pure love let these tepid souls, who, like corpses, filled You with such deep loathing, be once again set aflame. O Most Compassionate Jesus, exercise the omnipotence of Your mercy and draw them into the very ardor of Your love, and bestow upon them the gift of holy love, for nothing is beyond Your power.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon lukewarm souls who are nonetheless enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Father of mercy, I beg You by the bitter Passion of Your Son and by His three-hour agony on the Cross: Let them, too, glorify the abyss of Your mercy. Amen.

Divine Mercy Sunday veneration and Promise

I want the Image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it.

I want to grant a complete pardon to souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy (1109). Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment (300).

Reconciliation: The Tribunal of Mercy

Jesus spoke to St. Faustina:

When you go to confession, to this fountain of mercy, the Blood and Water which came forth from My Heart always flows down upon your soul (1602).In the Tribunal of Mercy ... the greatest miracles take place and are incessantly repeated (1448). Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy (1602).

Come with faith to the feet of My representative (1448). I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest ... I Myself act in your soul (1602). Make your confession before Me. The person of the priest is, for Me, only a screen. Never analyze what sort of a priest it is that I am making use of; open your soul in confession as you would to Me, and I will fill it with My light (1725).

Were a soul like a decaying corpse, so that from a human standpoint, there would be no hope of restoration and everything would already be lost, it is not so with God. The miracle of Divine Mercy restores that soul in full. Oh, how miserable are those who do not take advantae of the miracle of God's mercy! (1448)

We should derive two kinds of profit from Holy Confession:

1. We come to confession to be healed;

2. We come to be educated - like a small child, our soul has constant need of education. (377)

Most Blessed Sacrament

Jesus told St. Faustina Kowalska:

My great delight is to unite Myself with souls. Know, My daughter, that when I come to a human heart in Holy Communion, My hands are full of all kinds of graces which I want to give to the souls. But souls do not even pay any attention to Me; they leave Me to Myself and busy themselves with other things. Oh, how sad I am that souls do not recognize Love! They treat Me as a dead object. (1385)

Oh, how painful it is to Me that souls so seldom unite themselves to Me in Holy Communion. I wait for souls, and they are indifferent toward Me. I love them tenderly and sincerely, and they distrust Me. I want to lavish My graces on them, and they do not want to accept them. They treat Me as a dead object, whereas My Heart is full of love and mercy. (1447)

St. Faustina receives Eucharist as follows:

The most solemn moment of my life is the moment when I receive Holy Communion. I long for each Holy Communion, and for every Holy Communion I give thanks to the Most Holy Trinity. (1804)

Today, I prepare for the Coming of the King.

What am I, and who are You, O Lord, King of eternal glory? O my heart, are you aware of who is coming to you today? Yes, I know, but -- strangely -- I am not able to grasp it. Oh, if He were just a king, but He is the King of kings, the Lord of lords. Before Him, all power and dominion tremble. He is coming to my heart today.

But I hear Him approaching. I go out to meet Him and invite Him. When He entered the dwelling of my heart, it was filled with such reverence that it fainted with fear, falling at His feet. Jesus gave her his hand and graciously permits her to take her place beside Him. He reassures her, saying, See, I have left My heavenly throne to become united with you. What you see is just a tiny part and already your soul swoons with love. How amazed will your heart be when you see Me in all My glory. (1810) But I want to tell you that eternal life must begin already here on earth through Holy Communion. Each Holy Communion makes you more capable of communing with God throughout eternity. (1811)

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

In 193, St. Faustina received a vision of an angel sent by God to chastise a certain city. She began to pray for mercy, but her prayers were powerless. Suddenly she saw the Holy Trinity and felt the power of Jesus' grace within her. At the same time she found herself pleading with God for mercy with words she heard interiorly:

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us (475).

As she continued saying this inspired prayer, the angel became helpless and could not carry out the deserved punishment.

The next day, as she was entering the chapel, she again heard this interior voice, instructing her how to recite the prayer that our Lord later called "the Chaplet." This time, after "have mercy on us" were added the words "and on the whole world" (476)

In subsequent revelations, the Lord made it clear that the Chaplet was not just for her, but for the whole world.

Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you (1541). Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will (1731). Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death (687). When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior (1541). Priest will recommed it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only one, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy (687). I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy (687).

The Chaplet of The Divine Mercy (Pray using regular rosary beads)

Optional Opening Prayers

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelope the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.

(Repeat 3 times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

Begin

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

On the large bead before each of the five decades:

Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the ten small beads of each of the five decades:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Conclude with:

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. (repeat three times)
Jesus I trust in you!

Optional Closing Prayer

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair or become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to You holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself. (Diary 950) Amen.

Hour of Mercy

At three o'clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great mercy. .. In this hour I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion (1320).

As often as you hear the clock strike the third hour, immerse yourself completely in My mercy, adoring and glorifying it; invoke its omnipotence for the whole world, and particularly for poor sinners; for at that moment mercy was opened wide for every soul. In this hour you can obtain everything for yourself and for others for the asking; it was the hour of grace for the whole world - mercy triumphed over justice. (1572)

My daughter, try your best to make the Stations of the Cross in this hour, provided that your duties permit it; and if you are not able to make the Sations of the Cross, then at least step into the chapel for a moment and adore, in the Most Blessed Sacrament, My Heart, which is full of mercy; and should you be unable to step into chapel, immerse yourself in prayer there where you happen to be, if only for a very brief instand (1572).

Prayers at the Hour of Great Mercy

You expired Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fountain of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us (1319).

O Blood and Water which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You (84). (3 times)

LET US PRAY

Amen (Diary 950).

A PRAYER FOR DIVINE MERCY

All:

O Greatly Merciful God, Infinite Goodness, today all mankind calls out from the abyss of its misery to Your mercy - to Your compassion, O God; and it is with its mighty voice of misery that it cries out. Gracious God, do not reject the prayer of this earth's exiles! O Lord, Goodness beyond our understanding, Who are acquainted with our misery through and through, and know that by our own power we cannot ascend to You, we implore You: anticipate us with Your grace and keep on increasing Your mercy in us, that we may faithfully do Your holy will all through our life and at death's hour. Let the omnipotence of Your mercy shield us from the darts of our salvation's enemies, that we may with confidence, as Your children, await Your final coming - that day known to You alone. And we expect to obtain everything promised us by Jesus in spite of all our wretchedness. Proclaiming Mercy

Pope John Paul II writes,"The Church must consider it one of her principal duties - at every stage of history and especially in our modern age - to proclaim and to introduce into life the mystery of mercy supremely revealed in Jesus Christ" (Rich in Mercy, 14)

Proclaim to the whole world My unfathomable mercy (1142).

Proclaim that mercy is the greatest attribute of God. All the works of My hand are crowned with mercy (301).

Souls who spread the honor of My mercy I shield through their entire life as a tender mother her infant, and at the hour of death I will not be a Judge for them, but the Merciful Savior (1075).

Do whatever is within your power to spread devotion to My mercy. I will make up for what you lack. Tell aching mankind to snuggle close to My merciful Heart, and I will fill it with peace (1074).

Tell My priests that hardened sinners will repent on hearing their words when they speak about My unfathomable mercy, about the compassion I have for them in My Heart. To priests who proclaim and extol My mercy, I will give wondrous power; I will anoint their words and touch the hearts of those to whom they will speak (1521).

Adoration Prayer

I adore You, Lord and Creator, hidden in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I adore You for all the works of Your hands, that reveal to me so much wisdom, goodness and mercy, O Lord. You have spread so much beauty over the earth and it tells me about Your beauty, even though these beautiful things are but a faint reflection of You, incomprehensible Beauty. And although You have hidden Yourself and concealed Your beauty, my eye, enlightened by faith, reaches You and my soul recognizes its Creator, its Highest Good, and my heart is completely immersed in prayer of adoration.

My Lord and Creator, Your goodness encourages me to converse with You. Your mercy abolishes the chasm which separates the Creator from the creature. To converse with You, O Lord, is the delight of my heart. In You I find everything that my heart could desire. Here, Your light illumines my mind, enabling it to know You more and more deeply. Here streams of graces flow down upon my heart. Here my soul draws eternal life.

O my Lord and Creator, You alone, beyond all these gifts, give Your own self to me and unite Yourself intimately with Your miserable creature. Here, without searching for words, our hearts understand each other. Here, no one is able to interrupt our conversation. What I talk to You about, Jesus, is our secret, which creatures shall not know ... . These are secret acts of forgiveness, known only to Jesus and me; this is the mystery of His mercy, which embraces each soul separately. For this incomprehensible goodness of Yours, I adore You, O Lord and Creator, with all my heart and all my soul. And, although my worship is so little and poor, I am at peace because I know that You know it is sincere, however inadequate ... . (1692)

O Christ, let my greatest delight be to see You loved and Your praise and glory proclaimed, especially the honor of Your mercy. O Christ, let me glorify Your goodness and mercy to the last moment of my life, with every drop of my blood and every beat of my heart. Would that I be transformed into a hymn of adoration of You. When I find myself on my deathbed, may the last beat of my heart be a loving hymn glorifying Your unfathomable mercy. (1708) Amen.

For the Holy Church and Priests

O my Jesus, I beg You on behalf of the whole Church: Grant her love and the light of Your Spirit, and give power to the words of priests so that hardened hearts might be brought to repentance and return to You, O Lord.

Lord, give us holy priests; You yourself maintain them in holiness. O Divine and Great High Priest, may the power of Your mercy accompany them everywhere and protect them from the devil's traps and snares which are continually being set for the souls of priests. May the power of Your mercy, O Lord, shatter and bring to naught all that might tarnish the sanctity of priests, for You can do all things. (1052)

Jesus, my most beloved, I beg You for the triumph of the Church, for blessing on the Holy Father, and on all the clergy; for the grace of conversion for impenitent sinners. And I ask You for a special blessing and for light, O Jesus, for the priests before whom I will make my confessions throughout my lifetime. (240)

For One's Country

Most merciful Jesus, I beseech You through the intercession of Your Saints, and especially the intercession of Your dearest Mother who nurtured You from childhood, bless my native land. Jesus, for the sake of these innocent ones, grant me the grace that I am asking of You for my country. (286)

Pray to obtain Understanding of God

Jesus, give me an intellect, a great intellect, for this only, that I may understand You better; because the better I get to know you, the more ardently will I love You. Jesus, I ask You for a powerful intellect, that I may understand divine and lofty matters. Jesus, give me a keen intellect with which I will get to know Your Divine Essence and Your indwelling, Triune life. Give my intellect these capacities and aptitudes by means of Your special grace. Although I know that there is a capability through grace which the Church gives me, there is still a treasure of graces which You give us, O Lord, when we ask You for them. But if my request is not pleasing to You, then I beg You, do not give me the inclination to pray thus. Amen. (1474)

Prayer of Trust

I fly to Your mercy, compassionate God, who alone are good. Although my misery is great, and my offenses are many, I trust in Your mercy, because You are the God of mercy; and, from time immemorial, it has never been heard of, nor do heaven or earth remember, that a soul trusting in Your mercy has been disappointed.

O God of compassion, You alone can justify me, and You will never reject me when I, contrite, approach Your merciful Heart, where no one has ever been refused, even if he were the greatest sinner. (317)

Pray for the Grace to be Merciful to Others

I want to be completely transformed into Your Mercy and to be Your living reflection, O Lord. May the greatest of all divine attributes, that of Your unfathomable mercy, pass through my heart and soul to my neighbor.

Help me, O Lord, that my eyes may be merciful, so that I may never suspect or judge from appearances, but look for what is beautiful in my neighbors' souls and come to their rescue.

Help me, that my ears may be merciful, so that I may give heed to my neighbors'needs and not be indifferent to their pains and meaning.

Help me, O Lord, that my tongue may be merciful, so that I should never speak negatively of my neighbor, but have a word of comfort and forgiveness for all.

Help me, O Lord, that my hands may be merciful and illed with good deeds, so that I may do only good to my neighbors and take upon myself the more difficult and toilsome tasks.

Help me, that my feet may be merciful, so that I may hurry to assist my neighbor, overcoming my own fatigue and weariness. My true rest is in the service of my neighbor.

Help me, O Lord, that my heart may be merciful so that I myself may feel all the sufferings of my neighbor. I will refuse my heart to no one, I will be sincere even with those who, I know, will abuse my kindness. And I will lock myself up in the most merciful Heart of Jesus. I will bear my own suffering in silence. May Your Mercy, O Lord, rest upon me. (163)

Pray for the Conversion of Sinners

God of great mercy, who deigned to send us Your only begotten Son as the greatest proof of Your fathomless love and mercy, You do not reject sinners; but in Your boundless mercy You have opened for them also Your treasures, treasures from which they can draw abundantly, not only justification, but also all the sanctity that a soul can attain. Father of great mercy, I desire that all hearts turn with confidence to Your infinite mercy. No one will be justified before You if he is not accompanied by Your unfathomable mercy. When You reveal the mystery of Your mercy to us, there will not be enough of eternity to properly thank You for it. (1122)

Jesus, how sorry I feel for poor sinners. Jesus, grant them contrition and repentance. Remember Your own sorrowful Passion. I know Your infinite mercy and cannot bear it that a soul that has cost You so much should perish. Jesus, give me the souls of sinners; let Your mercy rest upon them. Take everything away from me, but give me souls. I want to become a sacrificial host for sinners. Let the shell of my body conceal my offering, for Your Most Sacred Heart is also hidden in a Host, and certainly You are a living sacrifice. Transform me into Yourself, O Jesus, that I may be a living sacrifice and pleasing to You. I desire to atone at each moment for poor sinners ... O my Creator and Father of great mercy, I trust in You, for You are Goodness Itself. (908)

I want all the tortures and pains that You suffered. I want to drink the cup of bitterness to the dregs. (1484)

O my Jesus, give me strength to endure suffering so that I may not make a wry face when I drink the cup of bitterness. Help me Yourself to make may sacrifice pleasing to You. The Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy

Saint Faustina Kowalska was a perpetually professed member of
the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy.
The sisters actively participate in carrying out Saint Faustina's mission by spreading the devotion to the Divine Mercy, by proclaiming the message of the infinite mercy of God, and by imploring Divine Mercy for the entire world. The Merciful Jesus has entrusted this great mission of mercy, to their spiritual co-foundress and sister, Saint Faustina, who is to prepare humanity for His second coming (cf. Diary 429); and so, assisted by Saint Faustina, and together with the volunteers and members of the "Faustinum Association of Apostles of the Divine Mercy" - who collaborate with our congregation in its apostolic works and live their spirituality in their respective states of life - as well as all Divine Mercy devotees throughout the world we strive to carry out this divine task.

Why the Chaplet for the Sick and Dying?

"GOD AND SOULS" is the motto of St. Maria Faustina of the Most Blessed Sacrament. One of the elements of the devotion that Jesus desired St. Fautina to spread is called the Divine Mercy Chaplet. He wants it to be offered especially for sinners and for the dying. Jesus is quoted in St. Fautina's Diary as saying:

Pray as much as you can for the dying. By your entreaties [that is, insistent prayers] obtain for them trust in My mercy, because they have most need of trust, and have it the least. Be assured that the grace of eternal salvation for certain souls in their final moment depends on your prayers. You know the whole abysss of My mercy, so draw upon it for yourself and especially for poor sinners. Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul (Diary, 1777)

Saint Fautina was often given the grace to know when a certain dying person desired or needed prayer; she would be alerted to the moment by the needy soul, by her Guardian Angel, or by Our Lord Himself. At those times she would pray until she no longer felt the need to pray, or a sense of peace came upon her, or she learned that the person had died, or heard the sould say, "Thank You!" She wrote: "Oh, dying souls are in such great need of prayer! O Jesus, inspire souls to pray often for the dying" (Diary, 1015)

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the best means of assisting the dying. Jesus revealed the power of this prayer to St. Faustina, insisting that she use it often -- even continuously. He told her:

My daughter, encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given to you. It pleases Me to grant everything they ask of Me by saying the chaplet. ... Write that when they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the merciful Saviour (Diary, 1541)

Earlier, Our Lord said to her:

At the hour of their death, I defend as My own glory every soul that will say this chaplet; or when others say it for a dying person, the indulgenceis the same (Diary, 811)

Saint Faustina comments: "Oh, if only everyone realized how great the Lord's mercy is and how much we all need that mercy, especially at that crucial hour!" She wrote these words upon hearing God the Father say within her: When this chaplet is said by the bedside of a dying person, divine wrath is placated, unfathomable mercy envelopes the soul, and the very depths of My tender mercy are moved for the sake of the sorrowful Passion of My Son (Diary, 811)

What if the person prays from a distance?

Saint Fautina had a love for the sick and dying, and prayed for them with great fervor. The Lord gave many promises regarding recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet at the bedside of the sick and dying. The following experiences recorded in her Diaray make it clear that one does not have to be at the bedside physically. She wrote:

"It sometimes happens that the dying person is in the second or third building away, yet for the spirt, space does not exist. It sometimes happens that I know about a death occuring several hundred kilometers away. This has happened severl times with regard to my family and relatives and also sisters in religion, and even souls whom I have not known during their lifetime" (Diary, 835)

And again: "My contact with the dying is, just as it has been in the past, very close. I often accompany a person who is dying far away; but my greatest joy is when I see the promise of mercy fulfilled in these souls. The Lord is faithful: What He once ordains -- He fulfills" (Diary, 935)

Recitation of the Chaplet during Eucharistic Adoration

This intention is particularly relevant for Eucharistic adorers. In chapels worldwide, they are praying the chaplet for the sick and dying and are part of an International Registry established by the Eucharistic Apostles of The Divine Mercy.

On the occasion of the Great Jubilee of the year 2000, the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, by a personally signed parchment, imparted a special Apostolic Blessing "to all the faithful, who during Adoration of Our Most Merciful Savior in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the altar will be praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the sick and for those throughout the world who will be dying in that hour." The Apostolic Blessing extends indefinitley for all who participate. The prayer program contained in this pamphet is offered as one way adorers might pray for the sick and dying during adoration using the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
